The Toyota Landcruiser Prado TX is one of the best mid-size vehicles that we offer at Car Hire Uganda for safari purposes. It is a 4×4 jeep that comes with 3 passenger seats comfortably though can accommodate up to 6 passengers.
Landcruiser TX always comes in manual transmission and is most liked by its extra power that enables it maneuver even the hardest roads for instance those in Kidepo National park. The bigger tyres allow more traction to the ground thus giving you a great driving experience even on non paved roads.

Land cruiser Prado TX with Rooftop camping
With the popularity of rooftop camping in Uganda, we have extended these services on Landcruiser Prado TX for more affordability. The Prado TX can be best fitted on with one rooftop tent (double sleeper) though due to budget constraints for some of our budget clients who would like to do rooftop camping with two tents (4 people), we can fit them as well.

However, 2 rooftop tents on a Land cruiser TX make the vehicle a little bit more heavy and can be slower on some occasions such as the steep hills of Kisoro and Kabale roads. This heaviness also exerts more pressure to the limbs thus more chances of brake wear out within short periods of time (20 days ).
COMMON ISSUES / LIMITATIONS
- A little bit more fuel consumption than a Toyota Rav4 type. On average, a Land cruiser Prado TX uses a litre of petrol for 8kms and 6.5kms for diesel which is a little bit higher for a Rav4 that can go 10 – 12km on a litre of petrol.
Ball Joints Failure
Since most of the Land cruiser TX rentals are those of the second generation (J90 1996-2002), they have a unique problem of failing ball joints which leads to collapse of the front wheels. But this only happens when not well checked and verified by the mechanic giving it out for usage.
A ball joint failure appears risky, but good news it doesn’t occur at high speeds, thus causes no harm to any passengers in the car
For such scenario, we always make sure all these sensitive components are checked and are upto standard to take you through your journey. Once it happens, you don’t need to panic, our rescue and road assistance team are always a call away at your service. Depending on where you are, it can take between 20 minutes to 2 hours to reach you and get you back on the road.
It looks scary but ball joints failure do not occur in higher speeds, they happen in speeds less than 15km/hr and causes no harm to the passengers in the vehicle
Causes of Ball Joint Failure
- Ball joints wear out due to age and stress of bad roads, it’s failure means the wheel hub may collapse as the ball joint has unsupported load bearing.
Precaution
- You can avoid this situation by not ignoring the symptoms of ball joint failure which include: steering clunking noise, excessive vibration and steering wandering.
